Public works employees are vitally important in our communities, and in great demand across West Michigan. Municipalities are looking for people who are passionate about improving the lives of those around them. The need is great, communities have partnered with Grand Rapids Community College to develop a hands-on, active learning experience that prepares you for great careers and opportunities in public works.
Successful graduates of the Public Works Academy
will receive interviews with two of the community partners for possible seasonal or internship positions at public works facilities in West Michigan. This is the first step to secure a full-time position.

- Engineering Technician
- Equipment Operator
- Fleet Services Technician
- Maintenance Worker - Utilities, Streets, Grounds, Building
- Parking Violations Checker
- Plant Assistant
- Safety Specialist
- Tree Trimmer
- Truck Driver
Training consists of Public Works Core (106 hours), Green Infrastructure (40 hours), and CDL Class A (140 hours).
The CDL Class A begins in week 4 for those who have 100% attendance.
The program is $235 (if you live in the City of Grand Rapids it's just $25) - the remaining cost is off-set by grant funding. This is open to individuals over 18 years old who are ready to work. High school diploma or GED is recommended. Must have a valid driver's license, good driving record, and no recent DUI's.
